To provide the taxpayers and agencies of Summit County an original townships layer at a scale and accuracy useful for property appraisal, planning, and analysis.

The Original Townhips layer contains polygons depicting the original subdivision of land into townships that make up Summit County. It was compiled from various historical records, including the Summit County parcel maps, recorded documents, and city and county legislation; and registered as closely as possible to the Summit County parcel maps.
Summit County was created from townships in two original subdivisions, the Connecticut Western Reserve, covering most of the county, and the Congress Lands, covering Green and Franklin Townships. The Western Reserve east of the Cuyahoga and the Old Portage Path (the western boundary of the United States at that time) was surveyed in 1796-97. The portion west of the of this line was not surveyed until after 1805. The Congress Lands were surveyed 1801-1803.

This dataset was compiled in, and exported from, an ESRI ArcGIS 9.1 LIBRARIAN database and is valid for the geometry rules pertaining to regions in ESRI's Coverage format.
Attributes are accurate as known to Summit County GIS.
This dataset has been registered as closely as possible to the Summit County parcel maps, and inherits the parcel maps' spatial accuracy. (see metadata for Summit County's Parcel Lines layer, and standards for boundary surveys as set forth in the Ohio Revised Code and Summit County Conveyance Standards). How close this dataset, or the parcel maps, relate to the long-destroyed original survey monumentation is unknown.
Dataset contains no vertical component.
