<descript>
<abstract>
Riparian corridors are the areas bordering water courses.
Riparian corridors include the associated floodplain, steep
valley slopes, wetlands, and open water areas. The riparian
corridor may be very narrow or quite wide, depending on the
unique conditions of the area. This differs from the
riparian buffer, which is simply a set setback from the
water course.
</abstract>
<purpose>
The riparian corridor can be used to determine areas for
restoration and preservation. Land within the riparian
corridor generally has a greater effect on water quality
than land outside of the riparian corridor. Ideally, some
land uses could be restricted within the riparian corridor.
However, in many areas of the county the riparian corridor
is so large that land use restrictions would not be
feasible. Best management practices should be closely
followed within the riparian corridor. Natural vegetation
(preferably forest or wetland) is the most desirable land
cover type in these areas.

Mapped riparian corridors may differ from actual boundaries
because of variations in topography and hydrology not shown
by the 2-foot contour intervals, grading of landscape, or
drainage alterations made during site/road construction.
Actual hydrology may also differ from mapped hydrology. The
digital hydrology data reflect conditions that were readily
apparent during the process of creating the digital
orthophotography mapping (dated April 26, 2000) and may not
reflect seasonal conditions, watercourses and channels that
were not captured in the orthophotograph imagery, or
ground-truthed determinations of the presence or absence of
water courses, with or without banks. Field verification is
essential to determine actual riparian corridors.

<procdesc>
Summit County's digital aerial photography (April 26, 2000)
was used to identify these areas. Topographic data (2 foot
contour intervals) and stream data were obtained from the
Summit County GIS. The digital orthophotos were printed at
1:400 scale. The immediate floodplain and valley slopes
were always included in the riparian corridor. Riparian
corridors were mapped for all mapped drainageways, except
for a few extremely small drainageways that were not
continuously mapped (these are mostly in urban areas where
small drainageways are culverted or follow storm sewers).
Adjacent wetlands, steep slopes, and open water areas were
also included. In many areas, it is difficult to discern
valley slopes from the natural rolling topography of the
area. Most steep slopes were included in the riparian
corridor. Riparian
corridors were delineated from hard copy maps. The
impervious surface data were digitized in ArcView 3.3 to
create the wetlands shapefile. Area and perimeter data were
calculated using the ArcView "calculate geometry" script.
Acreage attribute data were then added to the attributes
from the area calculated.
